Our ideal candidate is a veteran journalist ready to lead a newsroom in a top 10 market and has a strong gut for stories that are urgent, impactful, and newsworthy. You will work closely with other senior news managers, including the director of content, news director and digital director, in making sure our content choices are in line with brand strategy. We prioritize stories that are highly relevant to the lives of our viewers, striving to make a *** ter life for themselves and their families.
This position is integral to all parts of the newsgathering process and should set the tone for aggressively covering breaking news, consistently following up on stories as they develop, and constantly asking, "What voices have we not heard?"
The successful candidate will bring a news hound sensibility, collaborative spirit and be an excellent problem-solver, impeccably organized, and comfortable multitasking, and prioritizing. It is an always-on demanding role, so a calm character under pressure and tight deadlines is also necessary.
This role reports to the news director.
Responsibilities:
- Oversees daily coverage decisions and reporter assignments to be competitive across platforms and to be on brand with goal of owning the big story daily.
- In charge of newsroom readiness to respond to breaking news and weather events
- Supervises and schedules reporters and assignment editors.
- Oversees news planning process.
- Evaluates, recruits, and onboards new reporter and desk hires.
- Leads morning and afternoon editorial meetings
- Uses daily and long-term audience insights to aid in content choices
- Ensures competitive content across dayparts, newscasts, and platforms
- Works closely with reporters and assignment desk on future assignments
- Monthly check-ins and mentoring of direct reports to help reporter and assignment editors hone skills in developing sources and acting on tips
- Daily reporter script review
- Collaborates on newsroom projects, goals, and initiatives as necessary
- Creates, communicates, and executes big story and breaking news coverage
- Generates new angles and sidebar stories from lead stories
- Enforces assignment desk procedures to make sure newsroom stays on top of coverage opportunities
Requirements:
- A minimum of 6 years of journalism experience with an emphasis on and proven record of accomplishment of managing teams during breaking news and at least 3 years of management experience
- Knowledge of best practices of assignment desk operations
- Strong editorial and news judgment
- Impeccable organizational skills with a keen eye for detail
- Both a team player and a team leader
- Effective people and communication skills
- Familiarity with Atlanta or a reason to relocate here, strongly preferred
